Wednesday 29th July

I have been reading more of my book on the French Revolution this week and have found it fascinating now that I’ve reached the 1790s period. A strong parallel with today is the wide distribution of fake news/conspiracy theories which rile up the masses. It is also interesting how the different factions of the National Assembly created friction within France – those who wanted a constitutional monarchy versus republicans. I particularly liked (not sure that is the right word) a quote from Anatole France – The madness of the Revolution was to try to instigate virtue on Earth. When one wants to make men good, wise, moderate and generous, inevitably one wants to kill them all.

In addition to reading I have also exercised today and made my bed etc. I am, however, struggling to get up when my alarm sounds at 7am so I think I need to look into my night time habits to ensure I feel refreshed in the morning. This may mean setting myself a bed time and not having access to m phone throughout the night. I plan to look into this later today and devise a routine.

I’m due to have virtual work drinks with my soon to be new colleagues at 5:30pm today. Mum is heading out to see Billy now so I’ll have to look after the dogs in the meantime.

I also finished the TV show Indian Matchmaking. It made me feel sad that there is so much discrimination from all involved on what their match should be like. Height, skin tone and caste were all major issues for the majority of the candidates. Outdated gender roles were also heavily favoured. I don’t necessarily oppose the idea of arranged marriages but it is a shame that it is all about status as opposed to happiness.
