Monday 10th August

I woke up around 7am this morning, started to get ready at 7:30am and then went to move the car with my mum and Bonnie at 8am. Considering it was a Monday morning, Liverpool was very quiet; there were hardly any pedestrians or cars. I wonder if this is due to Covid-19 or if Liverpool is usually as quiet as this on a week day morning.

Yesterday we had a roast with Mike, his partner Katrina and his son Edward. It was good to see Mike, he was just like how I remembered him – jolly and full of stories about my dad. The dogs made the most of his garden – Chutney was exhausted at the end of the day and even Bonnie seemed tired.

Mike also spoke of the history of the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester. He said that it originated from the slave trade – Liverpool would bring slaves in but Manchester were against it and so boycotted the cotton that Liverpool imported. I found this interesting and plan to read up on this.

Earlier in the day we ventured through Liverpool city centre; went down to the docks and had our photograph taken with the statue of the Beatles. Heading back to the hotel, we stopped off in a pub and had a quick drink. I had a beer from the local Glen Affric Brewery called Tart an Typhoon which was a passionfruit and mango sour beer – I enjoyed it but you definitely wouldn’t want more than one or two in one sitting.

I think the plan for today is to do some more exploring and then head to the beach. We’ve not heard from Nick or Lana yet and Dulcie is still asleep so it will probably be this afternoon before we head out.

I’ve started reading the Satya Nadella book “Hit Refresh”. So far I have read the foreward and the first chapter. I’m enjoying it – it’s interesting to hear of his upbringing and how his dad tried to influence him with Marx whilst his mother encouraged him to be interested in Lakshmi (the Indian goddess of contentment). All Satya was interested in in his youth was cricket.
